British Airways Cabin Crew Trying to Avert Weekend Strike 3/19/2010

"We're at least talking. That's the good news, but at the moment there's only talks and certainly no breakthrough and no acceptable way forward for us but I'm still hopeful and optimistic and that's why I'm going back (for more talks)," Unite joint general-secretary Tony Woodley said.
Woodley also said cabin crew would call off the planned seven-day strike if management reinstated an offer which was withdrawn last week.
The dispute centres around cost-saving and specifically a reduction in the number of cabin crew staff on long-haul flights.

British Airways Cabin Crew Strike Updates
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said on Wednesday he believed a deal was still possible to prevent a planned British Airways cabin crew strike at the weekend.
Officials from the Unite union will meet representatives of the powerful US Teamsters union, which has 1.4 million members, for talks in Washington today. The British Airline Pilots Association, BALPA, said it would maintain a neutral stance in the dispute and that its members would work normally.
As a contingency measure, BA has trained staff from other areas of the company to fill in as cabin crew during the action, with plans to fly around 60 percent of customers booked for the March 20-22 period.
It said in a statement on Wednesday that growing numbers of cabin crew were volunteering to work normally and that over 60 other airlines had offered to help with charters or spare seats.
