GateGuru for your iPhone
GateGuru is a real cool tool for your iPhone
The basic concept behind GateGuru is that it can help you find amenities at the airport. Its list is extremely comprehensive. When you start the app, it uses your current location to pick the closest airport (or the airport you are at right now). Obviously, you can manually select airports if you need information on an upcoming trip or segment.
Once in an airport selection, you simply pick the terminal (for multi-terminal airports), then you are presented with a list of all the amenities. The list is fantastic. You'll find the common stuff like restaurants and shops, but also ATM's, mailboxes, computer charging stations and frequent flier lounges. You can also narrow down the results by selecting food, shops or services as your search category.
You can search for these locations by name, and by gate, as each of the entries describes exactly where you'll find it. So, if you are sitting at gate B22, you can enter the gate number, and find exactly what's around you.
Once in an entry, you can view its location, photo, rating, category and any user submitted reviews. That user submission portion of the app is one of its best features, and a sure way to kill some time at the airport. Just had a bad lunch at the airport ? Rate the establishment from inside the app, and share it with the world. Found an awesome bakery? Describe what made it so cool, and help fellow travelers.
Your may want to add EuropebyAir to your iPhone directory for quick reference when seeking cheap fares to and around Europe 1-888-321-4737

Movie map helps UK tourists to discover Sherlock Holmes'
Tourists are being encouraged to embark on their own mystery adventure ahead of the launch of the new Sherlock Holmes film.
UK tourism chiefs have themed their latest travel campaign around the film, which is based on the famous books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and opens in cinemas on Boxing Day.
On online movie map invites tourists to discover Sherlock Holmes' Britain and provides a round-up of the famous locations that feature in the film, including St Paul's Cathedral, the Houses of Parliament, Manchester town hall, Liverpool Docks and the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich, south London.
The website, which also features footage from the film and information about the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street in London, encourages visitors to plan short breaks to London, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh with a Sherlock Holmes theme.
The film's director Guy Ritchie said: "Sherlock Holmes is an iconic British character and bringing our story to life on the streets of London, Liverpool and Manchester was part of the fun of making this film.
"Given the 150th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birth this year, I'm excited to unleash our version of Sherlock Holmes to audiences in the UK and around the world."
Downey Jr said: "Sherlock Holmes has great pride in being English. London is an incredibly fascinating city and the centre of the world at the time our film takes place. Holmes knows every inch of it and feels it's his city. It was great fun filming throughout Britain."

Overview of Holiday Luggage Fees
Just in time for the holidays, new fees that airlines charge for your luggage have clocked consumers on the head like a giant nutcracker doll falling out of the overhead bin. If you’re not seeing stars yet, try making sense of each airline’s baggage-fees policy. You’ll need a complex decision tree, and perhaps a calculator. Robin Dalmas, Bing Travel sums it all up for you in his Guide to Luggage Fees article.

Ryanair's €100 fee for checking in two bags
Customers will soon face a fee of €100 for checking in two bags at the airport.
The low-cost carrier said that it's going to charge fliers more than three times the amount it previously did to check in a second bag at the airport, pushing the price up to €70. If it's checked in online, it will cost €35.
The airline also said that the price of checking in a first bag over the internet will jump 50pc to €15, and to €30 if it's checked in at the airport. Passengers can expect to pay the same again when they're flying home.
Those wanting to bring their skis on holidays this winter can expect to pay €40 for checking them in online, or €50 if they do so at the airport -- Again just one-way.
And for every kilo that a bag is overweight, passengers will have to pay €20, up from €15.
The changes will be effective from October 1. In addition the weight allowance for each customer's total number of checked-in bags will double from 15 kilos to 30 kilos. So, do the math when comparing ticket prices.

Greek carrier Aegean Airlines said it took part in the Greek government's tender of state-subsidized routes, seeking to service 17 mainly island destinations.
Aegean, which competes with Olympic Airlines, said it offered to service the routes with AVRO RJ 100 112-seat jets and ATR 72 88-seat planes.
It offered to service routes including the islands of Kalymnos, Ikaria, Astypalaia, Skiathos, Skyros, Samos, Chios, Lesvos, Karpathos and Kythera, providing flights from Athens and Thessaloniki.
The tender by Greece's civil aviation authority encompasses a total of 24 routes that are commercially unviable, guaranteeing state subsidies for the servicing carriers.

What Do You Tip in Germany
This is a common question for tourists and the simple answer is: you don’t have to tip anything. Unlike the US, with it’s miniscule pay for wait staff, Germany’s waiters and bartenders get a real paycheck at a decent rate. It is considered polite to tip, however, if the service and food has been good, but this is usually only a rounding up of around 10% and it is not at all a requirement. The German rules are that tax and service is included in the bill.
Many restaurants and bars in Berlin have been writing “Tip not included” on bills they hand out to foreign customers. Some restaurants have defended it, saying that tips from tourists have dramatically decreased recently, but it is a questionable practice. Stick to the roughly 10% - if you liked the meal and service. If it is just a coffee, for example, I often don’t tip at all, or round it up to the next Euro.
Oh, and as for hairdressers, hair washers, hair dryers, waxers, etc, etc? These guys don’t get tipped. You just enjoy the new style.

Identity Protection
Some suggestions and information you may want for your file. 1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.' 2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it. 3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box, use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. 4. Make copies of the contents of your wallet. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. In the event of loss or theft you will know what you had in your wallet including all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when traveling. If lost it makes re-application much easier. Here's some critical information to limit the damage in case of identity theft. 5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them. 6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., was stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all: 7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. Before being advised by a bank to advise an application for credit was made over the internet in your name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit. In addition to your bank, credit card companies, etc. here are some suggested numbers you may want to contact in the event your wallet is lost or stolen: (1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 (2..) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 (3.) Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289 (4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

Euro is down against the dollar might be a good time to head to Europe
A Euro is back under $1.30 again, much nicer than the $1.60 of last summer. Equally nice are the likely continued deals to be had on trans-Atlantic airfares, and more great deals on hotels and tours once you get to Europe. Low costs, a low exchange rate, and probably reduced visitor numbers in total all combine to make for the 2009 season to be the best for quite a few years. If you're thinking 'Should I/shouldn't I', you might want to give yourselves the benefit of the doubt and head to Europe this year.
